Home Insurance Costs Rising (Part 2)
Why are insurance premiums rising?
Based on data from Florida's Office of Insurance Regulation, it's evident that one of the primary factors driving higher insurance premiums in the state is the surge in litigation against insurance carriers.
The data indicates that Florida, due to its vulnerability to hurricanes, understandably accounts for a higher percentage of insurance claims compared to its population share. However, the concerning aspect is that Florida is responsible for nearly 75% of all lawsuits against insurance carriers, as depicted by the red bar.
This situation presents significant challenges for insurance companies, particularly in terms of the substantial costs associated with defending these lawsuits, as shown by the blue bars at the bottom of the chart. It's important to note that these legal expenses do not even include the costs related to claim repair and replacement.
Consequently, this trend has led to insurance carriers exiting the state in an attempt to restore profitability. Addressing the issue of litigation against insurance carriers in Florida is crucial to ensuring the stability and affordability of insurance premiums for residents.
